This essay is focused on Edna, 79 years old, who suffers from venous leg ulcers and as a result, she is visited twice a week by a community nurse. According to NHS, a leg ulcer is a long-lasting sore that takes more than four to six weeks to heal. Venous leg ulcers are estimated to affect around 1 in 500 people in the UK, although they become much more common with age (NHS,2018). Edna being a social and independent woman in the past feels isolated from society because of her constant need of care by others. Due to Edna’s condition, the primary care should be a community nurse, preferably a tissue viability nurse who has more knowledge than a community nurse. The Tissue Viability Service is nurse led and provides advice on the treatment of wounds (NHS, 2018).

The 6c’s in nursing are care, compassion, competence, communication, commitment, and courage and the nurses should act in accordance with this (Compassion in practice, 2012). According to Shahiari et al. (2013), the core value of a nurse is caring, which is a most fundamental part of nursing that characterises the whole concern for the total commitment of the well-being of a person.
In the case study, it is most important to take care of Edna as she is already feeling isolated from others. Caring is the most fundamental part of nursing that characterizes the whole concern for the well-being of a person, Edna should feel that she can trust her nurse to deliver safe care of a high standard. Therefore, there should be good communication between Edna and the nurse to make her feel wanted. The nurse would also need to report many potential other issues that may arise such as access to suitable nutrition and hydration as well as treating her legs (NMC, 2015). Compassion is how care is given through relationships based on empathy, respect and dignity. (RCNI ,2018). Competence can also be important to Edna’s care and the nurse should be able to understand Edna’s needs as well as have the skills and understanding to administer treatments well (Compassion in Practice, 2012). Respect should be of most importance for the patient as they are already dependent on the nurse to take care of their needs and this is the basic fact due to which Edna feels isolation. According to NHS older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation and it can have a serious effect on health (NHS, 2018). Due to her isolation, she looks forward to those nurses that show concern to her and are interested in her caretaking. In addition to her loneliness, she feels lonely and misses her old independent self, making her more psychologically depressed.
