Punishments sometimes do not completely deter criminals from recommitting again – if anything it is pushing them to be more aggressive.
Prisons serve to punish, rehabilitate and deter criminals from committing crime, whilst also protecting the community. However if not much action is put into actually rehabilitating these criminals, they are most likely going to reoffend. Contrary to belief, trying to punish criminals more harshly and adding more years onto their sentences only means that they will serve a longer time, rather than getting the help they need be able to adjust into society.
