In some occasions, competitive situation in the classroom make learners anxious. Price (1991) pointed out that anxious learners have a perception that their peers are more proficient in the target language than them (as cited in Zhang and Zhong, 2012, p.28). According to one study by Kayaoglu and Saglamel’s (2013), in competitive classroom environment, learners try to do better than their peers and when they fail to do so, they become anxious , “constant targeting of betterment may put strain on learner’ shoulder”. In the same vein, Zhang and Zhong (2012) also asserted, anxious learners usually have a tendency to compare their own language proficiency level with their peers (p.28).
