Can the thermal storage of molten salt in concentrated solar power systems be effective in meeting the electricity-on-demand role of gas and coal, allowing fossil fuel plants to retire and is it cost-competitive with our current power generation methods? The purpose of this study is to investigate the claim, “Thermal storage of solar energy could solve our energy continuity problems”. Is the concentrated solar power system with molten salt thermal storage effective in producing electricity and is it cost-competitive with our current methods? Considering that molten salt is used for both heat transfer as well as a thermal storage medium, is the concentrated solar power system clean and effective in generating endless amounts of electricity to eliminate our energy continuity issues?
